We propose a new form of apartment living inspired by the Mongolian ger. By applying its principles of centrality, circulation, and harmony with nature, the 360 Town-Housing project redefines housing for Ulaanbaatar, combining cultural identity with modern flexibility and infrastructure.
Gers provide a way of living in close connection with nature and community, yet younger generations increasingly choose apartments for comfort and stability. Our design resolves this tension by bringing cultural values into modern housing.
The site in Naadamchid Rd, Khan-Uul District, with its preserved natural environment and strong urban connectivity, provides an ideal ground for new lifestyles. Residents aged 20–39 told us they want homes that protect privacy and efficiency, yet still connect them to community and nature.
We identified four user groups: A (4–5 family members), B (young family with a child), C (newlyweds), and D (single professionals), and developed 12 unit types ranging from 35㎡ to 110㎡. Drawing from traditional motifs such as the “Ulzii” pattern and the expandable 5-wall ger, these units flexibly adapt to diverse needs.
The masterplan emphasizes circulation, shared programs, and community interaction, offering housing that balances cultural identity with modern comfort.
