Abellon Waste To Energy (WTE) Campus at Jamnagar

GAA.2024 Silver Winner | Architecture

Waste to Energy (WTE) Jamnagar Campus is an integrated renewable energy power plant that converts 750 MT/day MSW into 7.5MW of electricity, enough to power 15000 homes, while emitting no toxins.

Using only 20% of the site, it transforms 17 acres of barren land into a greenbelt with social infrastructure including a jogging track, playfield, research and community spaces. Tall tree hedges, native plantations, orchards, a lotus pond, and a misting pond filter sunlight, mitigate heat island effects, and improve the microclimate by guiding cool breezes.

Adopting “form follows function”, the 7825 sq.m. simple, open-span, lightweight prefab recycled steel structure optimises process flow by vertical stacking & sizing of equipment. The translucent, recyclable multilayered polycarbonate façade system with a compact footprint minimizes the surface-to-volume ratio, enhancing thermal performance, significantly reducing operational costs and energy consumption. Its light weight allows efficient, easy installation and reconfiguration, and high strength renders it resistant to impact and fracture. Translucent walls and roof panels reduce the need for artificial lighting.

The design optimizes process flow with compact, vertically stacked equipment. Processing 220000 tons of MSW annually, the plant generates 43.75 million units of green power, prevents 22000 tons of ocean-bound plastic, and offsets 37317 MT of CO₂. A 7.5 kW solar PV system powers all operations, with minimal human intervention throughout, tailored to India’s waste profile. Mist turbine condensers use 1 MLD of treated sewage water, cutting groundwater use and ocean pollution, while AI ensures efficient, low-maintenance cooling. Rainwater harvesting captures all runoff, storing up to 160000 cu.m.

With one of the lowest footprints among power plants globally, it is awarded as India’s first “Platinum-rated Net-zero Green Waste-to-Energy Campus” by IGBC & also received the 2023 Green Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum, besides many other accolades.
