Architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles Basic School

GAA.2024 | Public Choice Winner | Architecture
GAA.2024 Silver Winner | Architecture

The Architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles Basic School comprises several units – Basic School, Kindergarten, Special Education Unit, Orchestra Generation Music School, Library, Musical Auditorium, Gymnasium, Dining hall, and respective support spaces.
The project’s overarching principles were grounded in a commitment to creating an inclusive and environmentally responsible school environment, promoting well-being through natural energy systems. Additionally, it aimed to foster a sense of community among its users – students, teachers, and support staff – by establishing playgrounds and gardens within the school grounds.
All areas of the school are oriented to maximize environmental conditions, sunlight access, and views of the outdoors, offering a diverse range of environments. This includes spaces designed for quiet and concentration, such as classrooms, administration areas, kindergarten rooms, special education facilities, and the library, as well as communal spaces like atriums, corridors, and playgrounds that encourage interaction and joy. The Orchestra Generation auditorium is designed to provide an informal atmosphere, with a layout allowing various configurations regarding the positioning of musicians and the audience.
The school’s construction strategy prioritized durability and energy efficiency. Durability was emphasized to ensure that all systems and construction materials contribute to a longer building lifespan, with reduced maintenance requirements and increased resistance to wear and vandalism. Energy efficiency measures were implemented throughout construction, focusing on natural passive systems like lighting, ventilation, and thermal comfort.
