CHURCH ONDJIVA

GAA.2024 Honorable Mentions Winner | Architecture

Our task was to create multifunctional buildings capable of accommodating various activities such as a library, religious services, forums, conferences, events, and pavilions. Our primary concern was to address the harsh environmental conditions of Angola, characterized by extreme heat and solar radiation. Our design needed to prioritize shadowing and ventilation while allowing for future expansion and flexibility in spatial configurations. Additionally, the design of the church required consideration for accommodating a large congregation of up to 600 people while ensuring passive cooling solutions.
Our solution involved the strategic use of materials such as concrete and architectural elements to address the challenges posed by the environment. For the multifunctional building, we chose a rhythmic arrangement of columns which would create shading and allow for crosswinds to naturally ventilate the space. The design maintained an open and flexible layout that would accommodate future growth and adaptability. In the church, we designed to implement vertical metal blades to facilitate crosswinds from north to south, providing passive cooling. The design also incorporated a tall roof to accommodate the heat generated by the large congregation, with ventilation systems ensuring efficient airflow.
The final design of the multifunctional building and church stand as exemplars of innovative design solutions tailored to the specific environmental and functional requirements of the site. The rhythmic columns and vertical blades not only provide shading and ventilation but also contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the structures. The open and flexible layout of the multifunctional building allows for versatile use and future expansion, while the church design ensures a comfortable and conducive environment for worship. Overall, these projects demonstrate our commitment to sustainable and functional architecture that addresses the needs of both the community and the environment.
