A gymnasium, a school cafeteria, and a childcare center on a small plot of land and with a tight deadline: these were the challenges of this project commissioned by the City of Lyon.

From this program, with its very strong constraints, a project emerged—one that aimed to offer enhanced quality of use. Three functions and three technically distinct buildings, but unified by a single envelope, in the pathways and spatial sequences.

The sports hall extends to align with the street through an impressive cantilever, sheltering the forecourt below.

This forecourt is a protected space, designed to ensure children’s safety while maximizing conviviality for parents. The façades follow a staggered gradation, creating sheltered, accessible terraces. The building appears as a sculpted mass, with fine plasterwork, carved into the block of the city.

Inside, the spaces interlock with one another and naturally extend outward through the floor and ceiling. Circulation areas are enlivened by perspectives and planes of color.
