The commission for the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Perry, Florida, was a sacred undertaking aimed at enriching the spiritual landscape with a new parish columbarium. Drawing inspiration from the Maltese cross, a symbol of everlasting life, the sanctuary’s layout embodies a sense of eternal continuity. Panelized concrete discretely shields the inner courtyard, ensuring a tranquil retreat from the outside world, while a wrought iron gate adorned with cloud-like motifs symbolizes both security and the threshold to heavenly realms. Upon crossing this threshold, distractions fade away, inviting visitors on a poignant journey of remembrance and spiritual connection with their loved ones.
Materials such as wood, stone, and concrete were chosen deliberately to ground the space in earthly elements, while a framed view of the sky above recalls the soaring spires of sacred cathedrals, inspiring upliftment and awe. Central to the design is an angelic pergola, a unifying structure whose intricate design symbolizes protection and inclusivity, drawing all who enter into its embrace.
